You can order a taxi on time, enter the correct address and still end up spending extra time trying to meet the driver. The passenger may be waiting near one entrance while the car arrives on the other side of the building, with a fence, archway or courtyard with several exits between them. On the map, the distance looks tiny. On foot with shopping bags, a suitcase or a child, it is a completely different matter.

In Zaporizhzhia, this small detail is especially noticeable near long buildings along Sobornyi Avenue, shopping centres, hospital buildings and residential areas with internal access roads. A street address gets the driver to the building, but not always to the passenger. That is why the pickup point is just as much a part of the route as the destination address.

The best meeting point does not necessarily have to be directly outside the door. What matters more is that both sides understand the location in the same way and that the car can reach it easily. Sometimes it is better to walk a few dozen metres to a visible entrance or courtyard exit instead of waiting in a hidden corner that only local residents know well.

An address does not always explain where you are standing

The phrase “near building 48” sounds precise until it turns out that the building stretches along an entire block. “Near the shop” may not help much either if there are several signs nearby or the shop has two entrances. A useful message includes details that can be seen from the road. For example: the main entrance facing the avenue, the gate opposite the bus stop, the corner of the building near the pharmacy, or the courtyard exit next to a blue sign.

A landmark should be permanent and easy to notice. A parked white car may leave in a minute, and a person wearing a red jacket can disappear among other pedestrians. An entrance, barrier gate, building name or a particular side of an intersection is much more reliable. Clothing colour is better used as an additional clue rather than the main way to identify each other.

Before ordering, it is worth taking a moment to look at the location from the perspective of someone arriving there for the first time. Can the correct entrance be seen from the road? Does the navigation app lead to a service entrance instead? Is it possible to stop where the passenger is waiting without blocking traffic? This one minute before placing the order is often more useful than several phone calls after the car arrives.

In Zaporizhzhia, you can order a ride through Opti 579 digitally, but near a large building a map pin alone may not be enough. A short clarification about the entrance or the side of the street turns a coordinate into an understandable meeting point.

Near a railway station or bus station, it is better to mention more than just the name of the location. A passenger may be waiting by the main exit, on a quieter area away from the crowd, or near a specific sign. If you have luggage, you probably do not want to cross the square twice, so it is better to agree on the meeting side before the car arrives.

A courtyard can sometimes be more complicated than half the city

In older neighbourhoods, one entrance may be closed, another may lead to a neighbouring building, and entrance numbers may only be visible from close range. Residents use these routes every day and often do not notice how confusing they may be. For someone entering the courtyard for the first time, the phrase “it is just a normal courtyard” explains very little.

In this situation, a short directional description works better than a long explanation. Instead of saying “enter where everyone usually enters,” say “the entrance is from the neighbouring street, then turn right after the archway.” If the barrier gate is closed or there is little space to turn around inside the courtyard, it may be easier to arrange the pickup near the gate. The passenger may need to walk slightly farther, but both sides will know exactly where to meet.

Private residential areas have a different problem. The house number may be difficult to see in the dark, while the map pin may be positioned closer to the neighbour’s gate. In the evening, it is better to use a landmark that is clearly visible in the headlights. This could be the colour of the gate, a street corner or an illuminated sign. The house number is still useful, but it becomes more effective when combined with a visible landmark.

Weather also changes what makes a good pickup point. When it rains, it is natural to wait under a shelter, but that shelter may not be visible from the road. In winter or after heavy rain, it is worth considering puddles, slippery paths and areas where it is difficult for a car to turn. A meeting point should make sense not only on the screen but also in the real conditions of that particular trip.

If confusion has already occurred, long explanations over the phone rarely help. It is better to quickly name one fixed landmark and the side of the road. “I am standing near the main entrance facing the avenue” is more useful than “I am where the map shows.” If the car has ended up behind the building, it may sometimes be faster for the passenger to walk to an agreed corner than to ask the driver to make another loop through the courtyards.

An accurate pickup point does not require detailed knowledge of every street and alley in the city. You only need to agree on a place that is visible, accessible by car and unlikely to change within a few minutes. Then the journey begins not with trying to find each other, but with the reason the taxi was ordered in the first place — the ride itself.
