When you first get behind the wheel of a modern Chinese electric car — say, a BYD Han, the luxurious Tang, or the futuristic Song L — you cannot shake the feeling that you have stolen a spacecraft from a secret base in Shenzhen. Screens the size of a decent home TV rotate 90 degrees at the touch of a button, the cabin smells like the future, and the acceleration can send your internal organs on a short vacation. And all of this comes at a price that makes German automakers nervously reach for a sedative.
But the euphoria lasts only until you try to turn on navigation, set the clock, or simply install an app. At that moment, your dazzling BYD suddenly turns into a very expensive, beautiful, but completely deaf and mute tablet on wheels. You try to explain that you are in Kyiv or Lviv, while it stubbornly shows maps of Guangdong Province and waits for a password in Chinese. Welcome to the world of regional locking.
What is a regional lock and why did Chinese engineers decide to punish you?
Regional geoblocking, or a regional lock, is not simply the whim of Bavarian or Chinese developers. It is a strict digital boundary embedded deep inside the architecture of the onboard computer. When a BYD rolls off the production line for the Chinese domestic market (China Spec), it is built with the assumption that it will never leave the boundaries of the Great Firewall of China.
The DiLink operating system, which runs on a modified version of Android and powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon processors such as the popular 6125, 8155, or newer 8295-series chips, is tightly integrated with Chinese digital ecosystems.
The reason is surprisingly simple:
- The built-in eSIM chip (eUICC) is configured at the hardware level to work with local operators such as China Telecom or China Mobile.

It is a complex adaptation process that requires specialized diagnostic equipment, dealer-grade scanners, and a thorough understanding of the architecture of each specific control unit.
A complete software adaptation and interface localization process consists of several critical stages:
Bypassing hardware protection and engineering-level unlocking
Using specialized software tools and dealer protocols, engineers gain access to Developer Mode or bypass Bootloader protection. This makes it possible to work directly with the system partition of the operating system without turning an expensive navigation unit into a useless brick.

A regional lock is not a death sentence. It is simply a digital barrier that can be overcome with the right software tools, compatible firmware, and experienced specialists. After proper configuration, your BYD can finally break free from the Chinese firewall, gain full 4G internet access, a clear localized interface, up-to-date navigation, and become the futuristic car you actually paid for.
